Using LaTeX

My first post, LaTeX in MS Windows, was originally written in Word 2007. Fortunately Word has an export to Blog menu item – very useful, and very easy to implement. I first read about this function on a blog when I was googling about LaTeX.

See http://www.seifi.org/software/blogging-with-wordpress-and-word-2007.html or http://skattertech.com/2007/02/word-07-supports-wordpress/

The export from Word worked surprisingly well, apart from a few very minor glitches. A lot of the URL’s in the post required tidying-up.

To gain experience in writing LaTeX, I took the text from Word 2007 and pasted it (or imported it – can’t remember) into the LaTeX editor TeXworks which comes installed by default with Live Tex. A very useful editor it is too. I then had to format the text eg make text bold, change a font for error messages etc, and get the screenshots imported, by defining the path to the file. More about this (probably) in my next post.

I have to admit it was very much easier to format the text in Word, than to format the text in the LaTeX editor. Reason: I’ve many years experience using Word, whereas I’ve about 2 weeks worth experience in using LaTeX.

I created a PDF file from the LaTeX editor of my first post; it can be download from here :

The TeX source code can be found here:

The TeXworks editor has a very useful File|New From Template… menu item – here’s the screenshot:

I’ve selected the article class for XeLatex documents as this allows me to use any Windows font. I’ll be using Fontin for the main body of the text.

Here’s the resultant TeX source code:

I’ll go through my LaTeX code additions later…..
